The brief
An international corporate training provider brought me in to teach Google Sheets to the team at a US book review magazine: editors, advertising and the publisher herself. The course was "Google Sheets for Efficient Data Management and Collaboration", seven hours over two live online sessions.
How I prepared
Generic exercises wouldn't stick, so I asked for real examples first. The team shared the sheets they actually use: editorial assignment trackers, a budget, reader survey results with charts, and the advertising team's order tracker. I built the exercises around those, so every technique was shown on something the team would open again the next morning.
The sessions
- A pre-course questionnaire so Session 1 started from what the team actually needed.
- A written guidebook after Session 1, so the team had something to come back to.
- A debrief call with the publisher between sessions, to hear what landed and what the team wanted more of.
- Session 2 was planned from that feedback, and the plan was shared in advance so anyone could suggest topics.
The result
The publisher reported a lot of positive feedback from the team after the first session. Teaching is also how I work with clients day to day: I explain what I build in plain language, and I hand over so your team can run it without me.
